Frankel: Rep.'s anti-gay comments don't speak for most Pennsylvanians, including many Republicans
HARRISBURG, June 28 – State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, today denounced comments from Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Butler, and said Metcalfe doesn't speak for most Pennsylvanians, or even many Republicans.
When Rep. Brian Sims, D-Phila., an out gay man, attempted to speak briefly Wednesday about that day's U.S. Supreme Court's historic marriage rulings, Metcalfe objected to providing unanimous consent and then later told a reporter he expected Sims "was preparing to make (comments) that ultimately were just open rebellion against what the word of God has said, what God has said, and just open rebellion against God's law."
In addition, Metcalfe told the Associated Press, "There's no free speech on the floor."
Frankel said, "While the extreme wing of the Republican Party continues to bluster about denying rights, the numbers tell a different story. Since the Supreme Court ruling, almost hourly, new members are signing on to co-sponsor my legislation to protect LGBT people from discrimination. We're now at a record high of 88 House members. You can no longer count the number of Republican co-sponsors on two hands. Clearly, the Supreme Court ruling is galvanizing politicians -- toward equal rights, not away from them.
"Luckily, Pennsylvanians interested in promoting full equality don’t need to get distracted by the bombast of a few. We can now focus on two critical pieces of legislation – House Bill 300, to provide civil rights protections, and legislation to support full marriage equality in Pennsylvania. Most Pennsylvanians and most Americans don't want to follow the examples of theocratic governments – we value our constitutional separation of church and state."
