HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
March 2, 2007

Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader
Rep. Keith McCall, Majority Whip

Another step closer to property tax relief

Pennsylvania is the proud home to yet another job-creating slot gaming facility that is already generating money to add to the fund that will cut property taxes for homeowners and wage taxes in the southeast in the near future. Even with fewer than half of the proposed facilities up and running, revenue has been so strong that state officials are optimistic your next property tax bill could be cut courtesy of the slot gaming industry.  Click here to find out what Rep. John Hornaman has to say about Erie County's new Presque Isle Downs.

Fighting for YOUR good health

"A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings"

n       Hippocrates

Without your health, you're not left with much. That's why House Majority Democrats have been working with Governor Rendell to examine his proposed health insurance plan, and the House Majority Policy Committee is midway through a series of hearings around the state to examine our health-care system as a whole - preventative care to family doctors to preventing hospital infections to funding long-term care.

The goal is simple: making sure that when you and your loved ones get sick you can afford to see a doctor and get the quality care you need and deserve. Click here to find out more about what House Majority Democrats are doing to help you stay healthy.

Making history in Harrisburg

The Speaker's Commission on Legislative Reform concluded its scheduled meetings this week to make sure the people - not narrow-biased special interests - get their voices heard on changes to how the House conducts business. The full list of changes will be voted on March 12 by the House, but click here for a sneak preview of the sweeping reforms proposed by the committee, and click here for Reform Commission Co-chairman Rep. Josh Shapiro's take on the week's action.

Wrapping up the House Budget Hearings

The final hearings from Chairman Dwight Evans and the House Appropriations Committee are coming up next week in Harrisburg, with major agencies like the Department of Environmental Protection and Penn DOT on the agenda. You can view the committee's entire hearing schedule by clicking here and you can watch the proceedings via LIVE streaming video when hearings resume Monday.
