HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader |

House Democrats Committed to Property Tax Cuts A new Quinnipiac University poll shows that the majority of Pennsylvanians approve of raising the sales tax to reduce property taxes. According to the poll released Wednesday, state voters support 56 percent to 39 percent raising the state sales tax 1 percent with part of the money going for local property tax relief. A similar poll released in March had 54 percent to 40 percent in support.
This poll, and feedback we've received from residents across the state, makes the clear point that homeowners want more than lip service and complicated local tax swaps.they want their property taxes cut. The Majority House Democrats are committed to making it happen.
Two bills currently being circulated for co-sponsors would provide hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars, for local property tax cuts. The first would increase the state sales tax by one-half percent statewide, using the proceeds for dollar-for-dollar property tax cuts totaling $712 million.
The second would permit table games such as poker, blackjack and roulette at the state's 14 slots facilities authorized by Act 71 of 2004, with proceeds going toward property tax cuts. The bill also means more good-paying jobs at casinos and surrounding businesses, and more tourism and related economic development dollars.
Some are calling these discussions premature. But if not now, when? It is clear to us that Pennsylvanians want action now.
