HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
August 22, 2008

Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader
Rep. Keith McCall, Majority Whip

PA leading in agriculture and energy

House Democrats this week took part in Ag Progress Days, Pennsylvania's largest annual outdoor agricultural exposition sponsored by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. This year's Days included a focus on energy, with exhibits showing how energy can be generated from things like waste plastics, used cooking oil, and grain ethanol.

House Democrats have been working to make Pennsylvania a frontrunner in energy innovation, having recently guided to law an energy independence strategy that includes cellulosic ethanol production goals and standards and funding for alternative clean energy.

We also are gearing up to debate and enact the conservation piece of our energy strategy, a plan to help consumers save on electricity costs.

We applaud Gov. Ed Rendell for this week nominating John Hanger to be secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and James Cawley to be chairman of the Public Utility Commission. Both individuals have worked admirably in their fields and are welcomed partners in our attempts to advance alternative energies and grow jobs while protecting consumers and the environment.
