Rep. Lawrence Curry discusses the importance of removing bisphenol A (BPA) from infant and toddler products with Ursinus College Professor Rebecca Roberts during a Jan. 14 hearing on a bill he has introduced. His legislation would prohibit the manufacture or sale in Pennsylvania of baby bottles, training cups, formula cans or other child-care items that contain BPA. The estrogen-like chemical can be dangerous to children and adults as it has been linked to a range of health disorders including autism, obesity, learning and behavioral problems, early puberty, prostate and breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

State Rep. Rick Mirabito, D-Lycoming, gets some last-minute tips on how to show a dairy cow from local dairy farmer Ann Fry of Cogan Station. Mirabito competed with Hedwig in the Farm Show’s first annual VIP Dairy Showmanship contest on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Center for Dairy Excellence and the PennAg Industries Association, the competition paired Pennsylvania legislators with professional dairy farmers to vie for the coveted Master VIP Showman title. Corona was less than cooperative in the ring, and team Mirabito/Fry didn’t win, but Mirabito said the competition gave him a great opportunity to learn more about the dairy industry in Lycoming County.

Rep. Mann announces the award of a $1.8 million grant through the PA Housing and Finance Agency to the Allentown Housing Association and Development Corporation (HADC) on January 7, 2010. The grant will help rebuild the 400 Block of North Street, renewing this blighted area and offering first-time and reduced income homebuyers a chance to own a home.
