Many larger municipalities across the Commonwealth use Pennsylvania State Police for their local law enforcement instead of supporting their own local police departments. As a result, they don't have to levy taxes to maintain their own police force, which is
If more than 900 communities -- many with populations of less than 10,000 -- can support their own police force through property taxes and other fees, why can't these larger communities? I intend to continue my effort to stop this free ride and require municipalities with populations of 10,000 or more to contribute to their use of state police for local law enforcement. There are approximately 21 communities in Pennsylvania with populations of 10,000 or more that depend entirely on the state police for local law enforcement. If these communities were required to contribute a $100 per capita assessment for the use of state police, that would generate approximately $40 million, which could be used to hire 4,000 additional state troopers, increasing public safety for all Pennsylvania residents.
