Harkins announces $505,360 state grant for Erie sewer treatment project
HARRISBURG, July 15 – State Rep. Pat Harkins, D-Erie, today announced the Erie Sewer Authority will receive a $505,360 state grant for sewer treatment system maintenance.
Harkins said the authority will use the funding for much-needed channel upgrades for better ventilation by replacing valves and sealing pipes. The roof at the administration building also will be replaced.
"This grant will greatly assist the city in covering the costs of these projects while protecting public health," Harkins said. "Because thousands of people visit Erie each year to use the lake for recreation, it's important our sewage treatment remain in good condition. Doing so helps to reduce pathogens in the water, protects aquatic life and prevents algae blooms in the lake."
The grant was approved this week by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an independent state agency that administers a variety of state funding programs aimed at improving infrastructure and attracting private capital for economic development throughout Pennsylvania. One of those programs is H2O PA, created by the General Assembly last year. H2O PA provides single-year or multi-year grants to municipalities or municipal authorities to assist with the construction of drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer projects.
