Costa introduces bill to protect crossing guards

HARRISBURG, Nov. 16 – State Rep. Dom Costa, D-Allegheny, has introduced legislation that would make it a crime to assault a crossing guard.

Costa crafted H.B. 2087 after a Pittsburgh crossing guard was assaulted, but the alleged perpetrator was not charged with aggravated assault because Pennsylvania statute does not include crossing guards.

"The way Pennsylvania law is currently worded, crossing guards are not included as individuals protected by the aggravated assault statute," Costa said. "Crossing guards ensure the safety of children walking to and from school. It makes sense that the state provide for their safety, as well."

Title 18 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes currently protects police, school and municipal officials from aggravated assault.

House Bill 2087 is currently before the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.
