Dermody welcomes McEwen appointment
HARRISBURG, April 19 – House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody said today’s appointment of Judge Stephen McEwen to chair the Legislative Reapportionment Commission should allow the panel to organize quickly and move on to the work of reshaping the state’s legislative districts as required by the state constitution.
“Judge McEwen’s reputation is solid and his long tenure on the Superior Court was excellent preparation for this special task, which requires knowledge of the entire state and its many regions,” Dermody said. “I expect him to be a fair arbiter as the commission proceeds to do its work.
“Redistricting is a process of making choices in the interest of fairness. The natural role of a judge is to be even-handed and judicious. I believe Judge McEwen has the temperament to handle this critically important task very well,” Dermody said.
As one of the legislative leaders serving on the Legislative Reapportionment Commission, Dermody wants the group to hold public input sessions around the state in the coming months to allow people throughout Pennsylvania to be heard and offer ideas.
