White seeks naming of interchange for Purple Heart medal
HARRISBURG, June 29 – State Rep. Jesse White, D-Washington/Allegheny/Beaver, today introduced a bill (H.B. 1799) that would designate the interchange at Exit 48 of Interstate 79 in Washington County as the Purple Heart Interchange.
The Purple Heart is awarded to U.S. military personnel who are wounded or killed by enemy action. Since the modern version of the medal was instituted in 1932, it is estimated that more than 800,000 have been issued.
"The new National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is located near the Southpointe interchange," White said. "I believe it is most appropriate that this reminder of their service and sacrifice be prominently marked near the cemetery.
"Even motorists just passing by will see the designation and, for a moment, be reminded of the hardships and pain that servicemen and women have endured and continue to endure to keep our nation secure and free."
Signs would be put up on Interstate 79 to note the Purple Heart Interchange designation.
