HARRISBURG, Jan. 12 – On Jan. 14, state Reps. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, and Dan Moul, R-Adams/Franklin, will present Hanover Shoe Farms with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives honoring the farm for receiving national recognition for outstanding care and compassion for horses.
The presentation is scheduled during Farm Show week and will be on take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14 in the large arena of the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Media is encouraged to attend.
Hanover Shoe Farms, the most prolific Standardbred horse breeding farm in the world, was honored with the Lavin Cup at the 54th annual convention in San Diego on Dec. 9.
The Lavin Cup is named for former American Association of Equine Practitioners President A. Gary Lavin, and each year is awarded to a non-veterinary individual or organization that has exemplified outstanding care and compassion for horses and upheld AAEP horse welfare guidelines.
"I am particularly proud of the example that Hanover Shoe Farm has set in advancing the welfare of horses, not only in Pennsylvania, but also nationwide," Daley said. "I salute their outstanding compassion and devotion to the treatment of retired horses within the racing industry."
"As a personal friend to Hanover Shoe Farms, I cannot think of a more deserving organization to receive this award," Moul said. "They provide a sanctuary for horses whose breeding days are over, permitting them to live out their days in the tranquil and picturesque pastures on the farm. Their concern for the welfare of these animals is truly commendable."
Hanover Shoe Farms, located in Hanover, Pa. and owned by the partnership of Jim Simpson, Russell Williams and the Paul Spears family, adheres to a policy of retiring broodmares over the age of 15 deemed no longer fit for the breeding program. More than 100 are currently retired on the farm.
It is estimated that 1,000 retired broodmares, retired stallions, racehorses and lead ponies have lived out their natural lives at Hanover Shoe Farms. Nominators praised Hanover Shoe Farms for acting "ahead of the curve" in retired horse welfare by exercising compassion and generosity to its horses.
