Daley calls for action on state budget

HARRISBURG, June 26 – As negotiations over the state budget package continue, Commerce Committee Chairman state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, said "I’m here to work. If that means we stay in session 24 hours a day, seven days a week, I am prepared."

Daley called on legislative leaders and the governor today to continue negotiations on the 2009-10 state budget into this weekend to get the budget accomplished.

"Now is not the time to leave Harrisburg and go back to the districts," he said. "With only five days left until the deadline, we must work diligently and effectively to get this passed."

"There is no doubt that the governor’s plan is aggressive and comprehensive, pushing long-term solutions to the most crucial challenges facing the Commonwealth, but there are issues that have been laid out on the table that my constituents do not want," said Daley. "There will be intense scrutiny in these negotiations, and some very hard decisions."

Daley also noted that he is speaking out today for the concern of thousands of state workers who could be furloughed.

"They aren’t just in Harrisburg, they’re all over the state, including in my district. I know that the uncertainty of their job status is overwhelmingly stressful. It is my hope that those involved in these negotiations remember that and dedicate themselves to maintaining an active dialogue in the coming days."
