Charleroi Borough to receive funding for Coyle Theatre renovation
HARRISBURG, Oct. 8 – State Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, announced today that
Charleroi Borough is the recipient of $750,000 through the state's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program for the restoration and renovation of the historic Coyle Theatre.
“The Coyle theatre is a treasured landmark. How many of us do not cherish those childhood memories of going with our family and friends to see the weekend matinees,” said Daley. “The theatre closed in 1999 and now we have to travel over twenty minutes to get to a movie theatre located in a mall or shopping complex. It doesn’t have the same nostalgic feel.”
“I applaud Charleroi Borough for seeking grant funding and attempting to make the theatre reopen,” said Daley. “Research shows that a healthy and vibrant downtown boosts the economic health and quality of life in a community and, through the renovation of the Coyle, it will give our community a sense of pride."
Daley said in addition to the restoration of the theatre, the funding will assist in purchasing two adjoining buildings for use as a reception area, office space, dressing rooms and restrooms with handicapped accessibility.
“With the purchase of the two adjoining vacant properties that could be attached to the theatre, the increased footage would stretch the façade all the way to the corner of Fourth Street and McKean Avenue. The Coyle Theatre will serve as a cultural center for the Mon Valley.”
