House unanimously passes Kula bill ensuring safer hunting
Bill would stiffen guidelines for alcohol use while hunting or trapping
HARRISBURG, May 3 – The state House of Representatives today unanimously passed state Rep. Deberah Kula's bill that would lower the allowable blood alcohol level for adults when determining hunting or fur taking while under the influence.
House Bill 860 would lower the blood alcohol content of adults from 0.10 percent or greater to 0.08 percent or greater.
"This bill is about protecting public safety," said Kula, D-Fayette/Westmoreland. "The blood alcohol limit for driving under the influence was recently lowered to 0.08 percent, as was the limit for boating under the influence, so it makes sense that our hunters, who are walking through woods with loaded weapons, should be held to the same standard of sobriety."
Violation would be a misdemeanor and could result in a fine of $500 to $2,500, revocation of the privilege to hunt for one year and/or imprisonment for up to six months.
House Bill 860 moves to the state Senate for consideration.
