MEDIA ADVISORY

Casorio, Caltagirone to unveil tougher dog laws at rally Wednesday

HARRISBURG, May 13 – State Reps. James E. Casorio Jr., D-Westmoreland, and Thomas Caltagirone, D-Berks, will unveil legislation aimed at strengthening the state's dog and animal cruelty laws at a rally at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the Capitol steps.

The bills are part of Gov. Edward G. Rendell’s initiative to protect Pennsylvania’s dogs.

Casorio's legislation (H.B. 2525) would make clear distinctions between commercial kennels and other types of dog breeding and care facilities, such as pet shops; sporting, hobby and research kennels; and rescue kennels.

Caltagirone's bill (H.B. 2532) would impose stiff penalties for when surgical procedures, including tail docking, debarking and surgical birth, are performed on dogs outside of the recommended time frame and by someone other than a veterinarian.

Members from both the House and Senate, and a throng of supporters and their dogs, are expected to attend.

Media coverage is invited.
