Rep. George honors Korean War veterans

HARRISBURG, Oct. 14 – State Rep. Camille "Bud" George, D-74 of Clearfield, on Saturday honored about 30 Korean War veterans with a recognition ceremony and dinner at the VFW Post 6321, Stephen Kandrach Post, in Janesville.

"The brave men and women who served their country in the so-called "Forgotten War" will never be overlooked in Clearfield County," Rep. George said. "Many in the community helped make this a memorable event that brought many a tear to the eyes of participants."

Rep. George presented certificates of appreciation from the state House of Representatives and commemorative medals to the veterans, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary served a roast beef dinner.

The Korean War is never far from the minds of James E. and Eleanor Weston of Osceola Mills. Mr. Weston, an Army staff sergeant, enlisted as a 19 year old and was sent to Korea after training for two years at Fort Knox with the Third Armored Division.

"I lived a year in a tent or whatever we could find," Mr. Weston said. "I spent the last 10 months before the ceasefire pretty much surrounded in the Chorwon Valley."

He explained that his unit fought "right up to the line" but wasn’t allowed to cross the 38th Parallel.

Eleanor Weston -- who lost a brother, Gordon Mayes of Philipsburg, in Korea-- said the family includes two grandchildren adopted from Seoul, South Korea.

The Rev. Thomas McCoy provided the Invocation and Benediction, and the Janesville VFW Color Guard presented and retired the colors.
