Hanna plan to transfer parking meter inspection duties to local governments receives committee approval
HARRISBURG, July 8 – The state House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee today approved legislation (H.B. 1330) introduced by committee Chairman Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, which would transfer the responsibility to inspect parking meters from the Department of Agriculture to any local government entity that uses such meters.
Local governments that use these meters would gain the authority to oversee parking meter testing at least once every 60 days, or more frequently if they deem necessary. These local entities would also be permitted to accept reports of certified examiners of weights and measures as sufficient to meet the testing requirement.
"Across the country, most parking meters are maintained by city and county governments and authorities," Hanna said. "This transfer of responsibility for the accuracy of commercially used parking meters to local government entities is a logical step."
The bill would also give the Department of Agriculture the authority to establish training and certification requirements and procedures for certified parking meter inspectors.
The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
