Clinton, Centre counties awarded recycling grants
HARRISBURG, July 13 – State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, today announced that several grants totaling almost $105,000 have been awarded to communities in the 76th Legislative District to further recycling efforts.
The grants awarded to Clinton and Centre counties are:
· $38,217 to the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority to reimburse 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator's salary and expenses.
· $61,811 to the Centre County Commissioners to reimburse 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator's salary and expenses.
· $3,627 to the Centre County Solid Waste Authority to reimburse 50 percent of the costs for developing and operating a household hazardous waste collection event in 2008.
"I am so pleased that Center and Clinton counties have been recognized by the state Department of Environmental Protection for the work that they do to protect our environment and our citizens," Hanna said.
The first two grants are funded by Pennsylvania’s County Recycling Coordinator Grant program from the landmark Act 101 of 1988, one of the first comprehensive solid waste management and recycling programs in the country. These recycling programs are financed by a $2-per-ton recycling fee on all waste (except ash) disposed of in landfills or processed by resource recovery facilities in Pennsylvania. Besides grants for local recycling, planning and environmental protection programs, this funding subsidizes state programs for recycling market development, public education, technical assistance and grants administration.
The third grant is funded by the Pennsylvania Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant Program from Act 190 of 1996, which authorizes programs to collect and manage household or small-business hazardous waste, provided they are registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Most ongoing programs collect the waste once a year at one or more drop-off sites (one-day programs). Others offer such services on an ongoing basis (permanent programs).
