New emergency notification system launched
Enhances prison emergency warnings
HARRISBURG, Dec. 2 – State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, announced today that a new emergency system that will reach as many people as possible during a prison emergency, or other emergency, has been launched statewide.
Hanna said the AlertPA system helps officials send emergency text and email alerts to keep residents informed and make them the first to know when emergencies and other incidents occur.
Residents can visit http://alert.pa.gov to sign up for alerts, which include information on toxic chemicals, nuclear power plants, dam failures, extreme weather conditions and more. Among the most important alerts, he added, is notification about a prison emergency.
"The State Correctional Institution at Rockville is right in the heart of our region, and it should give residents comfort knowing that, in case of a prison emergency, they will be notified immediately in order to protect themselves and their families," Hanna said.
The AlertPA system will be used in conjunction with other prison emergency warnings, such as sirens or whistles and the automated phone system currently in use.
