Democratic Policy Committee to hold public hearing

on education funding cuts Thursday in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Feb. 13 – House Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster,

announced today that the committee will hold a public hearing on the continuing impact cuts to the state’s education budget is having on schools in the Commonwealth from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16,  Room 418 Main Capitol Building, Harrisburg.

Democratic chairman of the House Education Committee, State Rep. James Roebuck, D-Phila., will attend and co-chair the hearing.

Sturla said after initially denying it, the governor admitted last week that his administration has cut

overall state funding for K-12 public schools in its current budget proposal. He added that the inequitable cuts included in last year’s spending plan resulted in larger class sizes, massive layoffs of education professionals, districts exhausting reserve funds and property tax hikes across the Commonwealth.

The current hearing agenda is:

Ø  Pedro Rivera, superintendent of School District of Lancaster and president of Pennsylvania League of Urban Schools

Ø  Kendra Trail, superintendent of Southern Fulton School District and at-large director of Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools

Ø  Jennifer Hoover-Vogel, Legislative & Research coordinator

Ø  Joseph Otto, chief financial officer/board secretary, William Penn School District

The hearing is open to the public and media coverage is invited.
