Sturla elected House Majority Policy Committee chairman

HARRISBURG, Nov. 18 – State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, was elected today by his colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus to serve as Majority Policy Committee chairman, a top leadership position responsible for crafting key legislative initiatives.

"I am honored that my Democratic peers selected me to represent them on our leadership team as the Majority Policy Committee chairman," Sturla said. "The committee will have a vigorous schedule traveling all over the state to collect vital public input on a variety of important issues, including health care, job creation and energy. I also will work closely with our members and standing committee chairmen to help produce effective legislation."

As chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee for the 2007-08 session, Sturla helped shepherd through 22 new laws ranging from scope of practice expansion for health professionals to enabling substantial equivalency for certified public accountants.

"I am proud of my record as Professional Licensure Committee chairman and I hope to replicate my success with the Majority Policy Committee," Sturla said. "Being a senior member of the Southeast Delegation, I am also grateful to represent them in leadership, especially since our delegation is now the largest in the caucus. Overall, I believe we have a strong leadership team that can deliver on the issues important to Pennsylvanians."

Sturla has served in the House since 1991, as Policy Committee vice chairman from 1997 to 2006, and as deputy whip since 2003. He will start his tenth term in January 2009.
