Kavulich resolution memorializes local student
HARRISBURG, June 5 –Today the House unanimously adopted state Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich’s resolution observing June 2012 as Gary Lukasiewicz “Keep Fighting Gary” Month in Pennsylvania.
Gary Lukasiewicz, a constituent of Kavulich, was a senior at Riverside High School that recently lost his battle with a rare form of cancer. Gary was an exceptional student, athlete and member of the community.
As people learned about Gary’s fight through social media they used Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to send him messages encouraging him to keep fighting. More than 47,000 people tweeted messages with the hash tag, “Keep Fighting Gary” to encourage him to keep up the fight to live. The encouragement ultimately gave him the will to attend his senior prom, where he was voted prom king. Sadly, he passed away the next day.
“Gary was a beacon of hope to our community and beyond,” Kavulich said. “The support garnered by the local community is a true testament that the power of support, love, care and determination and using social media to perpetuate these sentiments should not be undermined.”
Kavulich said members of the community established a day of remembrance for Gary on May 21, 2012 and many continue to produce social media postings in his memory.
