Free help available at Mullery's local office
NANTICOKE, Dec. 9 – State Rep. Gerald Mullery, D-Luzerne, is reminding residents that the deadline to apply for a Property Tax/Rent Rebate is Dec. 31.
"My offices can help residents apply for this program, which offers eligible seniors, the disabled and widows and widowers a rebate on property taxes or rent paid in 2009," Mullery said. "Residents who received a Property Tax/Rent Rebate for 2008 should have already received an application for 2009."
Mullery said applications for the program can be obtained by stopping at his constituent service office at 156 S. Market St., Nanticoke, or by calling the office at 570-740-7031. The office is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The state Department of Revenue also has applications available through its website, www.revenue.state.pa.us.
Mullery said his staff is available to help constituents fill out the paperwork free of charge, but asks residents to call first.
"There's no reason for anyone to pay to have this paperwork completed," Mullery said.
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program provides rebates of up to $650 to income-eligible senior citizens, widows or widowers 50 and older or those 18 or older with a permanent disability. Participants need only count half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits.
