Mundy introduces bill to track wastewater from Marcellus Shale wells

HARRISBURG, Aug. 4 – State Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Luzerne, today formally introduced legislation that would create a simple, transparent tracking and reporting system for wastewater produced by Marcellus Shale natural gas wells.

"As more and more natural gas well operators drill in Pennsylvania's portion of the Marcellus Shale, it is incumbent upon the state to ensure that drillers are properly treating and disposing of wastewater," Mundy said. "Equally important is making that process more transparent for state residents concerned with land and water contamination."

House Bill 381 would build on Act 15 of 2010, which requires Marcellus Shale well operators to semi-annually report production data from each gas well to the state Department of Environmental Protection. The legislation would expand the law to cover wastewater produced by Marcellus Shale gas wells.

Under the bill, DEP would make the information available to the public on its website.
