House adopts resolution honoring Pennsylvania Major General

HARRISBURG, June 15 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, joined colleagues today in adopting a condolence resolution honoring Pennsylvania United States Army General Gerald M. Sajer and extending condolences to his family.

Pashinski said the resolution he cosponsored (H.R. 335) honors the memory of General Sajer whose military career began in 1946 and after serving in foreign wars he joined the Army National Guard.

Pashinski delivered remarks on the House floor.

"General Sajer was a creative man, a man of limitless ideas, never concerned about conventional thinking," Pashinski. "He always searched for ways to make the human spirit stronger and preserve the freedoms of the country he so loved."

Pashinski said General Sajer received numerous awards and decorations including the Distinguished Service Medal and demonstrated his creativity, energy and determination to improve the lives of military families.

The Luzerne County lawmaker said Sajer was the son of a coal miner from Milton, Pa and a poor family that experienced tragedy and extreme hardship very early in life.

In addition, Sajer went on to earn his undergraduate degree and received his law degree from Harvard University and a master's degree in public administration from Shippensburg University.

He is credited with converting the 28th Infantry Division from a light infantry to a modern heavy mechanized division, accomplishing that transition within three years, and under General Sajer's leadership, the Pennsylvania National Guard grew to the greatest strength ever, 24,000, and was widely regarded as the best Guard in the country.
