McCall elected Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives

HARRISBURG, Jan. 6 – State Rep. Keith McCall, D-Carbon, was elected and sworn-in today as Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives during a ceremony in Harrisburg.

"The Speaker's role has been described as being 'The Voice of the People,' and that's a responsibility I will never take lightly. I know there are more than twelve million people counting on me and my 202 colleagues, and centuries of history for us to look to for inspiration," McCall said.

"I want to express my most sincere thanks and appreciation to the members of the General Assembly for choosing me to stand at the rostrum where men like William Penn and Benjamin Franklin once stood," McCall said. "I intend to use my new position to restore the public's faith in government and bring together all the members of the House – rural and urban, newly elected and senior, Democrat and Republican – to do everything we can for the common good of this great Commonwealth and the people we proudly serve."

McCall, the 136th House Speaker in the 327-year history of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, is the first Speaker elected from Carbon County.

"I could not be more honored to be the first Speaker from Carbon County," McCall said. "I will continue to work on behalf of the people of the 122nd Legislative District, but also will work with my colleagues to find solutions for the issues that matter most to working families across Pennsylvania. There's no doubt that this is going to be a challenging session, but I know that my colleagues and I are ready to get to work."

McCall was first elected to the House in 1982, winning a special election for the seat held by his father, the late Thomas McCall, until his death.
