Donatucci to seek ban on alcohol ads

on state-funded transit systems

HARRISBURG, July 26 – State Rep. Robert Donatucci, D-Delaware/Phila., plans to introduce legislation to crack down on alcoholic beverage advertising.

Donatucci, chairman of the House Liquor Control Committee, said the bill would ban the advertisement of alcoholic beverage brands on state-funded transit systems.

An encounter with one overwhelming ad prompted Donatucci to introduce this legislation.

“Recently, I saw a SEPTA bus with a malt liquor advertisement wrapped over the entire bus. I find this completely unacceptable, considering taxpayer dollars are used to fund this transit system and the number of children who use transit,” Donatucci said.

He said advertisements that might be overlooked by adults could have a bad influence on Pennsylvania’s children and tempt them to drink while underage.

“The public transportation system is commonly used by young impressionable children. Our children should not be subjected to alcohol advertising on their way to and from home or school,” he said.

In addition to introducing the legislation, Donatucci also will hold a public hearing in Philadelphia in late August or early September to get feedback from residents.
