Lowery Brown named a rising star in women leadership
PHILADELPHIA, March 24 – State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown, D-Phila., has been selected as a rising star in the Next Generation of Women Leadership by the city of Philadelphia.
She will be honored at a reception in City Hall tomorrow evening with the city's other rising stars.
"I am incredibly honored to have been identified by City Council as a rising star in women leadership," Lowery Brown said. "I have always felt that if I wanted to affect change, it was up to me to make it happen, and that's what I strive to do."
According to the committee making the selections for rising stars, Lowery Brown is "an outstanding model of a professional woman growing and learning with each opportunity" who has demonstrated the courage to lead and the drive to make things happen.
Lowery Brown was sworn into office as state representative for the 190th Legislative District in January. Before her election to the state House, she was a community organizer for the West Philadelphia Coalition.
She also has worked as the community outreach specialist at a shelter for homeless women and children; led the Mothers on the Move Committee at the Philadelphia Unemployment Project; and was a representative for the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support. She also chairs the Community Policing Committee of the Weed and Seed Project, and sits on a number of other organizational boards.
As state representative for the 190th District, she represents the communities of Belmont, Carroll Park, Cathedral Park, Mill Creek, Haddington, East Parkside, West Powelton, Strawberry Mansion, Allegheny West and Lehigh West.
