Greg Vitali is the first Democrat elected to represent the 166th Legislative District – a traditionally Republican area – in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. A lifelong resident of Haverford Township, he is a 1974 graduate of St. Joseph’s Prep. He graduated cum laude from Villanova University in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 1981, he graduated from the Villanova School of Law and went on to establish a successful law practice in Havertown. He is a past adjunct professor of state and local government at Villanova University. After being elected to the House, he closed his law practice to become a full-time legislator for the people of the 166th Legislative District. As one of the top environmental advocates in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Vitali is a recipient of four prestigious environmental awards: the 1995 Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Legislator of the Year, the 1997 Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter State Legislator of the Year, the 2000 Pennsylvania League of Conservation Voters' Hero Award and PennFuture's Green Power Policymaker Award 2002. His global warming legislation is the first to pass in the state House. Vitali also has fought to make state government more open and accountable, and serves as one of 24 bipartisan members on the Speaker's Commission on Legislative Reform. He has led efforts for campaign finance reform in Pennsylvania, and has authored legislation that would set contribution limits in state races and provide public funding for governor and lieutenant governor races in return for voluntary spending limits. In recognition of his reform efforts, Vitali received the 1996 Common Cause of Pennsylvania Champion of Good Government Award. Currently, he is the subcommittee chairman for fiscal policy with the House Appropriations Committee. He also serves on the House Judiciary, Environmental Resources, and Energy and State Government committees, as well as the Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation committees. |
