Burns secures $1.9 million in grants for three local projects

Funds go to new fire station, Miracle League field, and Women’s Help Center

JOHNSTOWN, July 16 — As part of his ongoing efforts to bring home as many state grants as possible, state Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, today announced three new grants totaling $1.9 million for big-ticket projects in Cambria County.

The projects include a fire station in Johnstown, a Miracle League baseball field, and a community help center for the Women’s Help Center in Johnstown.

“Months ago, I met with each of these groups to go over their project and discuss the impact it would have on our community,” Burns said. “Loaded with that information, I got to work to successfully secure the funding.

“I believe government works for the people—not the other way around,” Burns added. “That’s why I’m constantly working to bring home funding that helps the people of Cambria County. In this case, our area is receiving grant funding that will benefit public safety and recreation for kids who need it most. I’m proud to play a role.”

The grant awards are for:

  • City of Johnstown: $750,000 to convert an industrial building into a fully functional fire station on Johnstown’s East Side.
  • Miracle League of Cambria County: $650,000 to construct Miracle League at Roxbury Park baseball field.
  • Johnstown Women’s Help Center: $500,000 to redevelop a property into a fully equipped community help center providing emergency shelter, counseling and support services.
