Philadelphia House Delegation condemns antisemitic violence on eve of Hanukkah

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 15 – Members of the Philadelphia House Delegation offered condolences today to the families of the victims and those injured in the antisemitic gun attack in Sydney, Australia, which occurred on the eve of Hanukkah.

“As we mark the beginning of the Festival of Lights, we hold a special light in our hearts for our Jewish brothers and sisters in Sydney as they recover from the horror of this tragedy,” said the delegation chair, state Rep. Morgan Cephas, D-Phila.

“The senselessness of targeted religious violence and antisemitism cannot be tolerated and must be condemned wherever it occurs. During this holy time of Hanukkah, let us reflect and rededicate ourselves to building a society free from gun violence and hatred, keeping Sydney’s victims and their families in our hearts.”

State Reps. Jared Solomon and Ben Waxman, both members of the Jewish faith, shared their reactions:

“This was an antisemitic attack rooted in a failure to recognize our shared humanity. It is especially painful because it occurred during the first night of Hanukkah. This holiday is a time to take pride in our faith, and even in dark moments, we rededicate ourselves to the miracle of Hanukkah and the enduring strength of our Jewish community,” said Solomon.

“I am horrified by the attack in Australia, and my heart is with the victims and their families. Violence and hatred, particularly when directed at people because of who they are or how they gather and celebrate, have no place in our world. As we enter the holiday season, fear will not keep us from coming together. Hanukkah celebrations, tree lightings, and other holiday gatherings reflect our shared values of joy and togetherness. We will continue to show up for one another, celebrate openly, and stand firmly against hate,” said Waxman.

The Philadelphia House Delegation comprises the 25 members of the PA House majority caucus representing most of the city of Philadelphia.
