Rep. Cephas calls for consumer protections in response to skill games court ruling

HARRISBURG, June 18  State Rep. Morgan Cephas, D-Phila., announced support for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s skill games decision. On June 15, the court ruled that skill games must be designated as slot machines and adhere to the state’s gambling law.

“I am thankful to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for its decision regarding skill games operating in Philadelphia and across the Commonwealth,” said Cephas. “This decision allows lawmakers to move forward in addressing the concerns surrounding skill games and gives the General Assembly an opportunity to act thoughtfully and responsibly. I am particularly looking forward to prioritizing the protection and safety of our communities as we work to identify next steps following this ruling.

“In communities across my district and beyond, skill games have posed risks to the safety and well-being of our neighbors. Residents have raised concerns about the presence of these machines in neighborhood businesses and community spaces, as well as the impact they can have on vulnerable individuals and families.

“As lawmakers consider future regulations, we must take caution regarding where these machines are located and ensure that any policies we advance reflect the needs and desires of the unique communities in which they operate. Local communities should have a voice in determining what is appropriate for their neighborhoods.

“Moving forward, we must ensure that the health, safety and well-being of our communities remain at the center of the conversation. I will continue advocating for consumer protections and safeguards that put Pennsylvania families and neighborhoods first."
