Comitta applauds funds awarded to Cheyney University to fight on-campus sexual violence
CHEYNEY, Jan. 16 – State Rep. Carolyn Comitta, D-Chester, today announced that Cheyney University received a $30,000 “It’s On Us” grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to combat campus sexual assault. Cheyney University is one of 36 higher education institutions across the commonwealth to receive these.
“Approximately 11% of all students experience some form of sexual violence, and this number only includes students who choose to report it,” Comitta said. “I’m deeply grateful to see these funds awarded to Cheyney University, as this is a step in the right direction from eradicating these traumatizing crimes from the community.”
Since 2016, the Wolf administration has awarded 113 It's On Us PA Grants totaling nearly $3 million to more than 60 postsecondary institutions across the state -- including public and private two-year and four-year colleges and universities. The institutions use grant funds to implement strategies on their campuses to address goals of Wolf's It's On Us PA campaign.
Programs or activities considered for funding include campus-wide training for students, faculty and staff; institutional campaigns to raise awareness and understanding of the reporting process and resources available to and rights of survivors of sexual violence; programs that enhance awareness of available resources and students' rights or seek to increase mechanisms for anonymous reporting; and efforts to improve capacity to collect federal- or state-required data.
