Deasy: Roxian Theater receives Community Initiative Award

HARRISBURG, Nov. 21 – State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, on Thursday announced the awarding of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office’s 2019 Community Initiative Award to McKees Rocks’ Roxian Theater.

Deasy said the Community Initiative Awards recognize the hard work and dedication of outstanding organizations, municipalities, agencies and individuals whose work embodies the theme of Pennsylvania’s statewide historic preservation plan.

The Roxian Theater opened in 1928, serving the McKees Rocks area as a vaudeville stage, movie theater, concert venue and banquet hall before closing in 2003. However, the founding of the McKees Rocks Community Development Corp. led to the eventual, long-sought revitalization of the theater, which opened – fully restored – in May 2019.

“The Roxian Theater has been a staple of McKees Rocks for generations. We briefly lost all the wonderful things it brought residents for so many years, but that’s no longer the case thanks to a crucial revitalization project that wrapped last spring. The theater is more than deserving of this award and I know residents feel the same,” Deasy said.

PA SHPO coordinates state and federal historic preservation programs, including the National Register of Historic Places, state and federal tax credits, and review of state and federal projects for their impact on historic resources.
