Proposal highlights overwhelming demand
Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler February 4, 2025 | 4:25 PM
HARRISBURG, Feb. 4 – State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler, D-Phila., applauded the inclusion of funding for the Solar for Schools grant program in Gov. Josh Shapiro’s proposed 2025-26 state budget.
The governor proposed a $25 million appropriation for the second year of the program, which was introduced by Fiedler in 2023 to help fund solar installations at schools across the commonwealth. Solar arrays funded by the grants have the potential to bring tremendous savings to schools and create good jobs in the communities that need them most.
“It’s an absolute honor to watch Solar for Schools grow. This renewed funding demonstrates Pennsylvania’s commitment to both finding creative school funding solutions and expanding our renewable energy production,” said Fiedler, who also serves as chair of the House Energy Committee.
“We saw overwhelming demand for the program during its first application period, and I’m excited to work with the legislature to secure this funding so even more schools get the chance to benefit.”
The program accepted applications for the initial $25 million appropriation through Jan. 31, 2025. According to the Department of Community and Economic Development:
DCED will now begin reviewing applications and will award grants this spring.
