Flynn says community helped sway decision to keep NEPA prisons open

HARRISBURG, Jan. 26 – Rep. Marty Flynn, D-Lackawanna, praised today’s decision by the Wolf administration to keep the three prisons open in northeastern Pennsylvania that had been considered for closure.

“During the past few weeks, there was an outpouring of support from the local communities, corrections officers and elected officials of both parties who did their best to convince the Corrections Department that the prisons in the northeast should remain open. Today, all of those efforts were vindicated when the decision was announced not to close SCI Waymart, SCI Retreat or SCI Frackville.

“I would like to thank everyone involved, including the more than 500 people who signed the petition on my website, for showing their commitment to ensuring that state officials knew the hardship that would be created in those areas if they lost the hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars associated with the facilities.

“A special thank you to Governor Tom Wolf and Corrections Secretary John Wetzel for listening to the people who were so passionate about the importance of keeping the prisons open,” Flynn said.
