Adm. Rachel Levine
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently removed Adm. Rachel Levine’s legally recognized name from her official portrait. This attempt to erase her identity does not change who she is or what she has accomplished — it only raises questions about why a federal agency would engage in such revisionism.
Adm. Levine’s portrait has hung among the leaders of the U.S. Public Health Service since 2021, honoring both her public service and her historic confirmation as the first openly transgender four-star officer in U.S. history. Her accomplishments are documented and verifiable — and they are not changed by the decision to deadname her on a wall.
In Pennsylvania, we have seen Adm. Levine’s leadership firsthand. Her work during major public health crises shaped our state’s response and continues to guide policy today. Efforts to diminish that — whether by altering official materials or denying her identity — do not weaken her legacy. They only raise questions about the credibility of those making such changes.
I’ve urged HHS to restore accurate information to her portrait. Public institutions owe the American people honesty, consistency, and records that reflect reality rather than ideology. This standard shouldn’t be controversial.

PRT Update on Bus-only Lane on Fifth Avenue in Oakland
Around January 4, 2026, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) will retire the contraflow bus lane on Fifth Avenue. The nine routes (54, 61D, 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, 75, 93, and P3) that currently use it will shift to Forbes Avenue, traveling with regular traffic and stopping at the existing Forbes stops.
The change is intended to accommodate the construction of a new protected bi-directional bike lane on Fifth Street as part of the University Line project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2027. The project will also include dedicated bus lanes on both Forbes and Fifth, along with upgraded sidewalks, ADA-compliant ramps, improved traffic signals, and safer pedestrian crossings.
