Frankel Applauds Pittsburgh City Council for Protecting Public Services and Strengthening Anti-Discrimination Protections

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 4 – State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, praised Pittsburgh City Council for advancing two ordinances that will give voters the opportunity to protect city services and prevent discrimination in municipal contracting. The measures will appear as referendum questions on the ballot for the May 2025 primary election.

Ordinances 1425 and 1426 were introduced in response to a proposed ballot initiative that could force the city to cut ties with businesses based on where they operate—potentially disrupting Pittsburgh’s ability to work with major employers and service providers. The ordinances will ensure that city contracting decisions remain focused on the best interests of Pittsburgh residents, rather than being dictated by broad, discriminatory mandates.

“I applaud city council for standing up for Pittsburgh,” Frankel said. “These ordinances keep our focus where it belongs—on strong public services, not political games that divide our communities.”

Frankel said the measures would protect Pittsburgh’s Home Rule Charter from being misused to impose impractical legal obligations on the city government, ensuring that local leaders can continue prioritizing effective governance over ideological agendas.
