Gainey to host back-to-school backpack giveaway

Free backpack and school supplies available to students in K through 5

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 15 – Because every student should start the school year with a smile on their face, state Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Allegheny, on Saturday will host a free backpack and school supply giveaway to students in grades K through 5 at Destiny International Ministry in Pittsburgh.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Destiny International Ministry at 7061 Lemington Ave. Students must be present to receive a backpack and school supplies. Additionally, Gainey and his staff with have additional information available on state programs for kids, safety information, food and music.

“As we look forward to the start of another school year, I want to make sure that our youngest students are doing just that, and are excited to begin a new year,” Gainey said. “As a community, we need to be doing what we can to lift-up our next generation, and one of the most powerful tools we have is education. If this event can impact even one life, prepare one child for tomorrow or encourage one young girl or boy to attend school and gain an education, then I will consider it an unqualified success.”

This is the fifth year Gainey has held the back-to-school event. For more information, or for businesses or organizations interested in donating supplies, backpacks or food, contact his office at 412-665-5502.
