Supporting our firefighters with a proposed new grant program

I was proud this week to support the Fire Company Transformational Grant Program, which passed the House on a bipartisan vote. House Bill 2446 would set aside $30 million annually to help qualifying fire companies pay for much-needed expenses such as new equipment, firefighter recruitment, station upgrades, and safety and operations improvements.

Our local fire companies perform a vital job in protecting us, yet they have to scrape together the dollars to do it. House Bill 2446 would provide much-needed financial assistance. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Hosting Clairton’s state champs at the Capitol

I was excited to host members of the state champion Clairton Bears football team at the state Capitol last week along with Senator Pisciottano. This was a great way for these young men to be recognized for their accomplishment! Thank you to U.S. Steel for sponsoring the bus for these student athletes to make the trip to Harrisburg.

Backing bills to help our neighbors and improve communities

It’s been a busy month of June in the Capitol, and besides H.B . 2446, I’ve voted YES in the House on several important bills that we sent to the Senate, including:

H.B. 1814 would require schools to restrict cell phone usage from bell-to-bell, giving the school districts discretion on how to implement the policy.
H.B. 2314 would begin a public education campaign regarding artificial intelligence (AI) which would help the public manage an internet seemingly flooded with AI-generated content.
H.B. 2254, also called Ryan’s Law, would allow terminal patients to use the medical marijuana they’ve been prescribed while in healthcare facilities, far increasing the ease of their remaining time.
H.B. 2425 would establish a grant program for career and technical schools to update and modernize curriculum, improving the education they are able to provide to students.
H.B. 69 would allow for unused prescription medicine to be donated to in-need patients through pharmacies, expanding the existing Cancer Drug Repository Program.
H.B. 1106 would establish Certified Chiropractic Assistants (CCAs) to assist in therapeutic exercises to give patients better care and ease the burden on chiropractors themselves.

Celebrating Older Americans Month at LifeSpan

I stopped by Mon Valley LifeSpan recently to celebrate Older Americans Month, and what an incredible event it was! Seniors enjoyed helpful resources, plenty of snacks, and a fantastic performance of Beatles classics by the Clairton Elementary students — they absolutely lit up the room.

Thank you to LifeSpan for hosting and for creating such a meaningful space for our residents and young people to come together!

Grants and loans for businesses to relocate or expand

Applications are open for grants and loans from the state’s PA SITES program to develop competitive sites for businesses to relocate or expand in Pennsylvania. Entities that may apply include municipalities, economic development organizations, redevelopment authorities, municipal authorities, industrial development agencies, and for-profit organizations. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and approved on a quarterly basis.

2026 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program now open

Eligible Allegheny County residents over 60 can receive $25 in vouchers for fresh, local produce. Unlike in previous years, you can now apply online and have vouchers mailed directly to your home. If you’d prefer a paper application, just stop by my office so my staff can help you apply.

Apply for Property Tax or Rent Rebates

Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program helps older friends and neighbors stay in their homes while affording life’s necessities, and applications are open. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people with disabilities 18 or older. Rebates range from $380 to $1,000, and the deadline for applying has been extended to Dec. 31.

House Fellowship Program accepting applications
for fall 2026

The PA House Fellowship Program is accepting applications from eligible Pennsylvania college students for the fall 2026 semester. Fellows work in committees or leadership offices at the state Capitol. The program provides compensation and may also offer college credit. Eligible applicants include college juniors, seniors, graduate students, or law students with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applications are due by July 1.
