Clairton City School District awarded $361,990 Solar For Schools grant

HARRISBURG, May 29 – State Rep. Dan Goughnour, D-Allegheny, announced that Clairton City School District is the recipient of a $361,990 state grant for a solar power project.

The grant is from the Department of Community and Economic Development’s new Solar for Schools Grant Program, which helps schools across the commonwealth implement solar energy systems.

“This program is a way to help school districts save money on energy costs while also increasing the state’s renewable energy production,” Goughnour said. “Energy costs are some of the highest costs for school districts and they’re often unpredictable. Knowing what that cost will be can help with budgeting and allow schools to better fund other needs such as critical repairs, or additional resources or staff, while also holding the line on taxes.”

The Solar for Schools Grant Program was created in July 2024 to reduce the cost of implementing solar energy systems into schools across the state. School districts, intermediate units, charter schools, technical schools and community colleges are eligible for the program. The funding may cover the purchase and installation of equipment, permit fees, energy storage and utility interconnection.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority is an independent agency that administers the Solar for Schools Grant Program, as well as other state economic stimulus packages.
