Kenyatta praises Wolf’s executive order to protect children from abuse

HARRISBURG, July 31 – State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Phila., announced his praise for Gov. Tom Wolf’s executive order creating an Office of Advocacy and Reform, with a new child advocate position.

“As elected officials, protecting children is one of the greatest responsibilities we have,” Kenyatta said. “I have been leading this issue in Harrisburg because it’s up to us to ensure that the kids at Glen Mills, and all other facilities like it, are safe. I want to see everyone responsible for the mistreatment of the children at Glen Mills School held fully accountable. This is a step in the right direction.”

In March, Kenyatta introduced H.R. 320 to urge the state Department of Human Services to investigate allegations of abuse and review procedures for reporting potential child abuse in all state-licensed reform schools following reports of abuse at Glen Mills School.

Today, Wolf, citing revelations of violence against children at the Glen Mills Schools, ordered the state to restructure its oversight of Pennsylvania’s juvenile residential programs.

Wolf also instructed state agencies to reduce the number of children placed in institutions across the state and increase accountability for these institutions.
