Kim welcomes consul general of South Korea to PA House chamber

HARRISBURG, June 9 – State Rep. Patty Kim, D-Dauphin/Cumberland, expressed gratitude for South Korea Consul General Euy Whan Kim's visit and inspirational speech this week in the PA House on strengthening economic ties and cultural exchange between Pennsylvania and Korea.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the consul general for his enlightening speech on the power of collaboration during his visit with the House of Representatives,” Rep. Kim said. “Over the past 70 years, the consulate general has tirelessly worked to unite our communities, strengthen bilateral relations, and build upon the great progress our two nations have made. His commitment to fostering community development and enhancing the enduring friendship between Korea and the United States is truly commendable. We express our sincere appreciation for his continued efforts and friendship."

Consul General Kim’s visit was hosted by the Pennsylvania Legislative Asian Pacific American Caucus. The consulate general position has grown to symbolize the strong bond between Korea and the United States.

“With the world seemingly becoming more and more polarized, today’s event allowed us an opportunity to recognize the Korean community and their significant contributions to both of our nations,” said Rep. Kim.

“Being here with you today holds a special meaning. Pennsylvania is where freedom and the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence was described in 1776,” the consul general said. “143 years later, 150 Koreans gathered together in Pennsylvania and called for Korea’s independence. Among them was Dr. Syngman Rhee, who later became the first president of Korea. This led to an alliance that has been central to Korea’s diplomacy and economy as well as freedom and prosperity. Considering all this, as consul general, I will do my best to further promote economic, cultural, and person-to-person exchanges between Korea and the Keystone State to bring the mutually beneficial and promising partnership to new heights.”

The consulate general of the Republic of Korea covers five states in the northeastern United States: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware.
