Patty Kim asks residents to volunteer on Martin Luther King Day
HARRISBURG, Jan. 12 – As co-chairwoman for Harrisburg’s 2016 MLK Day of Service, state Rep. Patty Kim, D-Dauphin, urged area residents to sign up to volunteer on the Jan. 18 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Kim said there are a number of volunteer opportunities available across Central Pennsylvania. She said interested volunteers can look at the various opportunities and register to participate at www.centralpamlkday.org.
“Martin Luther King Jr. Day should be celebrated as a day on and not a day off,” Kim said. “I believe we can best honor his legacy by volunteering to help our fellow citizens.”
Area residents are also invited to attend the 2016 MLK Day of Service opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18 at Steelton-Highspire High School cafeteria, 250 Reynders Ave., Steelton.
The opening ceremony includes:
- Children’s activities (crafts/face painting)
- On-site volunteer opportunities
- Collection bin for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank
- Donations accepted for local shelters.
President Bill Clinton signed legislation making the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a national day of service in 1995. Over the past 20 years, millions of people have volunteered across the country on the January holiday.
