Rep. Pisciottano's Weekly Email Update - Recognizing Firefighters, Supporting Local Unions, Scam Prevention, and more!

(Dec 10, 2021)

I had the pleasure of meeting Joel, a hard-working UFCW Local 1776 union member, when I stopped by my local Wine & Spirits store this week. Joel’s union brothers and sisters are keeping busy, stocking festive beverages in every PA county to make spirits bright this holiday season. Wine & Spirit workers generate more than $800 MILLION in annual profits that help fund essential state programs. These good paying, union jobs are a huge asset for our community. Thank you to all the union members in Pennsylvania! Read more

Pisciottano secures $99K grant to fight blight in Glassport

(Dec 02, 2021)

DRAVOSBURG, Dec. 2 – State Rep. Nick Pisciottano announced today that the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development awarded a $99,500 grant to Glassport for a borough-wide demolition project to fight blight. Pisciottano worked closely with DCED and Glassport elected officials to identify sources of additional funding for their crucial revitalization projects. “Glassport is embarking on an ambitious revitalization of its community and one of the most important steps in that project is to clear out vacant and poorly maintained abandoned properties to make them more attractive for future investment,” Pisciottano said. “These properties are detrimental to the community’s aesthetic and financial values and pose a safety hazard if not properly maintained. I commend the leadership of Glassport elected officials in pursuing this type of funding and look forward to it being used to the benefit of the whole community.” Pisciottano said the grant money will be used for engineering, bidding, asbestos abatement, demolition and site restoration for a number of commercial and residential properties throughout Glassport. Official presentment of the grant funding will occur at the Glassport Borough council meeting on Dec. 21. Read more

Pisciottano announces $710,000 in state funding to boost transportation and recreational projects

(Nov 22, 2021)

DRAVOSBURG, Nov. 22 – State Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-Allegheny, announced today the Commonwealth Financing Authority has awarded more than $710,000 in grants to transportation and recreational projects in Glassport, South Park Township, West Mifflin and Baldwin. Pisciottano said Glassport was awarded $300,000 through the CFA’s Multimodal Transportation Fund to remove and repave the brick roadway along Delaware Avenue from 6 th Street to 9 th Street. The project will also add 16 ADA ramps and pedestrian crosswalks at all intersections. “The brick road along this stretch of Delaware Avenue has multiple depressions, creating an uneven surface for drivers and homeowners who use the route frequently,” Pisciottano said. “This project would help to provide a smoother street, while also making the area more accessible and safer for all pedestrians.” Another Multimodal Transportation Fund grant in the amount of $200,000 was awarded to South Park Township to assist with the improvement of the intersection of Route 88 and Brownsville Road, which is frequently traveled by people in the 38 th legislative district. The project includes widening Route 88 to add a left turning lane and increase sight distance, as well as the installation of a new energy efficient traffic signal and sidewalks along the roads. Pisciottano said the CFA also awarded the following grants from its Greenways, Trails and Read more

House unanimously passes bill to increase monthly pension amounts for some of Pennsylvania’s veterans

(Nov 12, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Nov. 10 – State Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-Allegheny, announced the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has unanimously passed H.B. 1220 , legislation to increase the monthly pension amounts for the Blind and the Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension programs. “Our veterans deserve our continued support and after more than 20 years, it is time to increase these monthly pension payments,” said Pisciottano, who co-authored this bill with state Rep. Jim Gregory, R-Blair. House Bill 1220 would increase the monthly pension payments from $150 to $250 a month and that number would automatically increase with inflation. These two veterans’ pension programs have not seen any increases since 1999. “These veterans served and sacrificed so much for our country and they deserve whatever additional support we can give them now,” Pisciottano said. During the 2019-20 fiscal year, the Blind Veterans Pension Program helped 102 veterans here in Pennsylvania and the Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension Program served 2,008 veterans. House Bill 1220 has passed the House and now goes to the Senate for consideration. EDITORS/ASSIGNMENT DESKS: Video of Rep. Pisciottano’s remarks on the House floor are available here . Read more

Pisciottano introduces legislation to provide tax relief for volunteer firefighters

(Oct 21, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Oct. 21 – State Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-Allegheny, introduced legislation today to create a program that would provide property tax relief for those in fire service while allowing local businesses to directly support the fire companies that protect their neighborhoods. “The number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania has severely dwindled since the 1970s when there were more than 300,000. Now there are as few as 38,000 volunteer firefighters,” Pisciottano said. “These brave men and women do this important and life-saving work without getting paid, and in many cases, spend their own money on gear and equipment. My legislation would provide a much-deserved financial break and offer support to these critical members of our communities.” Pisciottano said the legislation would create a program that would offer tax credits to businesses that donate to designated nonprofit firefighting organizations. Those organizations would then use the funds to make direct property tax payments to school districts, counties, or municipalities on behalf of volunteer firefighters. “My proposed tax relief program is sustainable because it does not put an extra financial strain on local municipal budgets while recognizing those folks who willingly volunteer to run toward the fire to protect us all,” Pisciottano said. The legislation has been introduced as House Bill 1990 . Read more
