Free certificates for veterans, scholarship opportunity and student art contest for a cause

I want to share important information for veterans and their families regarding free birth and death certificates from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

A new law allows all veterans who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable discharge to be eligible for fee waivers on these documents. Previously, only those in active service or honorably discharged qualified.

Normally, there is a non-refundable $20 fee per copy, but most veterans can now obtain up to 10 copies for free. This also applies to the spouse or widow(er) of eligible veterans, provided their applications include documentation of military status.

For more information or assistance, feel free to contact my staff or me.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS

The Keystone Contractors Association Scholarship Program provides $40,000 in scholarships to Pennsylvania residents who are attending Pennsylvania colleges or universities, and who are committed to help build the future of Pennsylvania.

This scholarship program is open to graduating high school seniors and current college/university students who are seeking a construction-related degree.

The deadline to apply for this program is March 1.

Annual dog licenses and lifetime licenses are available through the Allegheny County Treasurer’s Office.

GET CREATIVE TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT LYME DISEASE

Students in first through sixth grades are invited to use their creativity with posters or videos to raise awareness about Lyme disease and how to stay safe from ticks while enjoying the outdoors. “Protect. Check. Remove.” is the theme for the 2025 Lyme Disease Student Art Contest. Finalists will be invited to a special award ceremony at the State Capitol in May, and the top winners will even see their artwork featured in a 2025 calendar!

Check out the state Department of Health’s website to learn how to enter by March 14.
