As chair of the House Game and Fisheries Committee, I joined committee members in visiting Elk County to discuss and learn more about issues impacting the elk population in our Commonwealth. This isn’t just a hunting issue, it’s also an economic one. Each year, applications for elk licenses are submitted from every state in the country, and hundreds of thousands of visitors descend on the town of Benezette, also known as the Elk Capital of Pennsylvania. Our elk population is a natural resource we're lucky to have, and one that means a lot to our state.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Keystone Elk Country Alliance took our group out into the fields and woods to get a close-up view of the elk (and other animals). Here are just a few of the photographs taken by my executive director, Paul Scott. What an amazing, inspiring experience!

With the fall hunting season underway, I want to wish all hunters the best of luck! I want to highlight some important dates and a few reminders to keep in mind from the PA game Commission.

2026-27 marks the first Pennsylvania hunting season with Sunday hunting expanded to include all Sundays that fall within season start and end dates, except migratory game bird seasons.

While Sunday hunting is open for all state game lands and state forests, it’s limited in some state parks and state preserves.

Before heading outdoors, get a refresher on regulations, license requirements, and more by reviewing the 2026-27 Hunting & Trapping Digest. Hunters can also view their licenses on huntfish.pa.gov.

Know a college student interested in state government? Let them know the PA House Legislative Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2027 semester.

Applications are due by October 1.
