Longietti: Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County awarded $137,000 for building expansion

Will triple food bank’s cold storage capacity

HERMITAGE, Dec. 9 – Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County has been awarded $137,000 to expand the facility’s cold storage capacity, state Rep. Mark Longietti announced today.

Longietti, D-Mercer, said the funding – awarded under the COVID-19 Food Bank Cold Storage Infrastructure Program – will increase the food bank’s ability to maintain fresh, perishable foods.

“Securing this funding is going to enable Community Food Warehouse to expand its cold storage area by 20 feet, which will triple that storage capacity,” Longietti said. “That’s terrific news because it means the facility will be able to maintain a greater supply of the fresh, nutritious foods – including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products – that families need for good nutrition.”

The COVID-19 Food Bank Cold Storage Infrastructure Program allows Pennsylvania food banks to purchase, expand, or upgrade cold storage facilities to ensure that they can deliver fresh food to struggling families. Eligible purchases include refrigerators, coolers, freezers, refrigerator trailers and cargo vans, building expansions, and more.

The grants are part of a package of $11.4 million in funding to food banks statewide. More information on the grants is available here.
