Rep. Matzie statement on school funding designations

HARRISBURG, Dec. 13 – State Rep. Rob Matzie, D-Beaver/Allegheny, issued the following statement today regarding the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s designation of schools to receive additional support to improve student outcomes through the federal Every Student Succeeds Act program:

“These funds will go a long way in helping our kids learn and achieve. This is a new way of directing dollars to schools so that they are better utilized. It takes into consideration many factors beyond just test scores to determine needs and gives state government the flexibility to target education funding more wisely with better results. That is good news for our schools and students that are making progress overall but struggling in certain areas.”

More information on the program can be found at https://www.education.pa.gov/K-12/ESSA. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act program, enacted in 2015, is a replacement for the former No Child Left Behind program.

The schools in Rep. Matzie’s district that will benefit from the program are Aliquippa Junior/Senior High School; Ambridge Area High School and Freedom Area Middle School.
