Rep. Lindsey Powell and I are hosting “The Giving Season,” our Thanksgiving Food Resource and Maternal Health event on this Saturday, November 22, from 1:00–3:00 PM at Salem’s Market, 1850 Centre Avenue in the Hill District!

Our staff will be available to connect our neighbors with state resources such as SNAP, LIHEAP, and Property Tax/Rent Rebates. Turkeys and maternal health resources are first-come, first-serve and while supplies last.

The Pennsylvania CROWN Act has passed the Senate 44-3!

This is a victory for everyone who joined our movement in the CROWN Act coalition and worked over the last FOUR legislative sessions to get this bill passed.

Today, we end hair discrimination, protect natural hair, and affirm dignity for more Pennsylvanians.

I want to thank Speaker McClinton for her tireless efforts -- long before I ever became a member of the PA House of Representatives -- to see this bill pass out of the House and Senate, which now heads to the governor’s desk.

I also want to thank my staff in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh; the statewide PA CROWN Act coalition of over 100 organizations, businesses, unions, municipalities, and entities that have garnered public support for House Bill 439 all across this commonwealth; Dr. Adjoa B. Asamoah, the CROWN Act champion who has led this fight for years at the federal level; the national CROWN Act Coalition; and so many more!

Because of the federal government shutdown, Pennsylvania was forced to delay the opening of LIHEAP—vital home-heating assistance for 300,000 families. LIHEAP will open on Dec. 3.
